The 52-Hertz Whale

Somewhere in the North Pacific there is a whale that sings at 52 hertz. Blue whales sing at around fifteen to twenty. Fin whales sing at about twenty. Nothing else in the ocean sings at fifty-two.
It has been tracked for over thirty years. It has never been seen. Nobody knows what species it is.
You have almost certainly heard about it, and you have almost certainly heard that it is the loneliest whale in the world, calling out on a frequency no other whale can hear, singing into a silence that will never answer.
That is a very beautiful story, and the registry has to tell you that it is not true.
What is documented
The detection. The call was first picked up in 1989, on the United States Navy's SOSUS hydrophone arrays, which were built to listen for Soviet submarines and were opened to scientific use as the Cold War ended.
The tracking. William Watkins and colleagues at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution followed the animal from 1992 to 2004. Their paper is the primary source on the case and was published shortly after Watkins died.
The frequency. Around 52 hertz. Blue whale calls run roughly ten to thirty-nine hertz, typically in the teens. Fin whales call at about twenty. Fifty-two is well above both, which is why it stands out so plainly in the data.
The song is a blue whale's song, at the wrong pitch. The pattern and structure of the calls resemble those of a blue whale. The frequency does not.
The movements. It ranges across the North Pacific in a seasonal pattern broadly consistent with a migrating baleen whale.
It is aging normally. This is the finding in the Watkins paper that almost nobody repeats, and it is one of the most important facts in the case.
Over the years of tracking, the animal's calls have dropped in pitch, from around fifty-two hertz toward the high forties. That is what happens to a baleen whale as it grows: a larger animal produces a deeper call.
The whale is growing. It has been growing, and calling, and migrating, for well over thirty years.
It has never been seen. Not once. Everything known about it is acoustic.
Leading explanations
A hybrid. The leading candidate. Blue and fin whales are known to hybridise, and hybrids have been identified. A blue-fin hybrid would plausibly produce a call intermediate in character between its parents, and might well produce a blue whale's song at a frequency neither parent uses.
A malformation. An individual with an abnormally developed vocal apparatus, producing a normal song at an abnormal pitch.
An unknown species, or a rare individual of a known one. Possible and unsupported. It has never been seen.
And there may be more than one. In 2010, hydrophone arrays off California recorded fifty-two hertz calls at multiple locations at the same time.
One animal cannot be in two places simultaneously. If those recordings are what they appear to be, there is more than one of these whales, and the entire premise of the famous story collapses.
What the popular version gets wrong
"No other whale can hear it." This is the load-bearing claim of the loneliest-whale story, and there is no good evidence for it.
Baleen whale hearing is broadband. A blue whale that calls at fifteen hertz is not deaf above fifteen hertz, any more than a man with a deep voice is deaf to a soprano. There is no reason to think other whales cannot hear a fifty-two hertz call, and considerable reason to think they can.
The whale is not shouting into a void. Other whales can almost certainly hear it perfectly well. What they may not do is recognise it, which is a different and sadder and more interesting thing, and it is also not established.
"It is the loneliest whale in the world." It has been calling for more than thirty years. It has been feeding, migrating, and growing that entire time. It is healthy.
An animal that could not communicate at all, that was truly and totally isolated from every member of its species, would be under considerable disadvantage. This one has thrived for three decades.
"It calls out and nothing ever answers." Nobody knows that. We have hydrophones in some places and not in others, we cannot hear most of what happens in the Pacific, and we have never seen the animal.
"It is alone." There may be more than one.
Current status
Partially explained. The animal is real, has been tracked for over thirty years, is growing normally, and calls at a frequency that no known species uses. Its identity is unresolved, and hybridisation is the leading hypothesis, and it may not be a single animal.
The registry keeps this record because of what happened to it in the telling.
There is a genuine and lovely scientific puzzle here: an unidentified baleen whale, singing a blue whale's song a full octave too high, tracked for three decades and never once laid eyes on.
That was not enough. Somebody added the loneliness, and the loneliness is what travelled. It has produced documentaries, songs, artworks and a great deal of very sincere grief, on behalf of an animal that appears, on the evidence, to be doing fine.
The mystery is real. The sadness was ours.
