Hessdalen Lights

Lights appear in a valley in central Norway. They hover, they move, they change colour, and they have been doing so for decades. This is not a matter of eyewitness testimony. There is an automated measurement station in the valley, run by a university, that has been photographing and instrumenting them since 1998.
Hessdalen is the closest thing that exists to a laboratory for an unexplained light phenomenon: a place where the thing keeps happening, and where scientists have had time to point instruments at it. They have recorded it repeatedly. They still cannot say what it is.
What is documented
The outbreak. Between December 1981 and the summer of 1984, residents of the Hessdalen valley reported luminous phenomena at an extraordinary rate: on the order of fifteen to twenty sightings per week at the peak. They were seen by many people, over a long period, in a sparsely populated valley where there is very little to mistake for anything.
The science. Project Hessdalen began in 1983, initiated by Norwegian researchers including Erling Strand. Field campaigns brought in cameras, radar, spectrometers, magnetometers and seismographs. In 1998 an automatic measurement station was installed, and it has been operating since, run in association with Østfold University College and with participation from Italian researchers including the CNR.
What the instruments have recorded. Photographs and video of luminous objects. Radar returns coincident with visual sightings. Magnetic disturbances recorded at the same time as some events. Spectra of the light itself.
This is the part that distinguishes Hessdalen from almost every comparable case: the phenomenon is not merely reported. It has been measured.
The rate now. Activity has declined greatly from the 1981 to 1984 peak. Events are now reported on the order of ten to twenty times a year, which is enough to keep a research station busy and not enough to make the problem easy.
Most events are explained, and a residue is not. Sustained observation has attributed a large proportion of reported sightings to ordinary causes: vehicle headlights on distant roads, aircraft, astronomical objects, and atmospheric refraction. This is what serious long-term study of any such phenomenon produces, and it is what makes the remainder interesting.
Leading explanations
None is established. The registry sets out the serious candidates and states that the mechanism is unresolved.
Ionised dust or plasma. Spectral analysis by Bjørn Gitle Hauge and colleagues has been interpreted as consistent with burning or ionised dust clouds containing elements including silicon, scandium and titanium. Where such a cloud would come from, and what would ionise it, is the unfinished part.
Piezoelectric effects from rock stress. The valley's geology includes quartz-bearing rock. Quartz under mechanical stress generates electrical charge, and it has been proposed that tectonic strain in the rock could produce charge sufficient to ionise air. The mechanism is real; whether it operates at the scale required, and whether the necessary strain is present, is not established.
A natural battery. A proposal advanced by researchers including Hauge notes that the valley has a sulphurous river and mineral deposits, and suggests that the valley itself constitutes a large electrochemical cell, with the river as electrolyte, capable of producing electrical discharge. It is a specific, testable and unusual hypothesis, and it has not been confirmed.
Radon and other atmospheric processes. Various mechanisms involving atmospheric ionisation have been proposed.
Ordinary causes for most of it. This is not a competing hypothesis but a necessary component of any honest account. A great many Hessdalen sightings have been attributed to headlights, aircraft and celestial objects. Any explanation of the remainder must first survive the subtraction of everything that has already been explained.
What the popular version gets wrong
"Hessdalen is proof of UFOs." It is proof that something luminous occurs in that valley and can be photographed and radar-tracked. Every serious researcher working there is looking for a physical mechanism, and the value of the site is precisely that it permits that search. Attaching an extraterrestrial interpretation to it adds nothing and subtracts the only thing that makes it scientifically useful.
"Scientists have no idea what it is." They have several ideas, some of them specific and testable, and they have a great deal of instrumental data. What they do not have is a confirmed mechanism, which is a different and much more ordinary situation.
"It happens all the time." It happened all the time between 1981 and 1984. It now happens on the order of a dozen or two dozen times a year, and the decline is itself an unexplained feature of the case.
"They have ruled out mundane explanations." They have ruled in mundane explanations, for a large fraction of the sightings, which is a very different and much more credible activity.
Current status
Partially explained. A real, recurring, instrumentally recorded phenomenon, with a substantial proportion of reported events attributed to ordinary causes and a residue that is not, and with several proposed physical mechanisms of which none is confirmed.
The registry keeps Hessdalen as the model of how this kind of case should be handled. Somebody put instruments in the valley and waited. That is all that is required, and it is almost never done.
