Spontaneous Human Combustion

For three centuries, bodies have occasionally been found almost entirely consumed by fire in rooms that barely burned. The claim attached to them is that the body ignited from within. The physical pattern is now well understood and has been reproduced experimentally. What has not been closed is that in some individual cases the ignition source was never identified, and in 2011 an Irish coroner recorded spontaneous human combustion as a verdict.
What is documented
The pattern. The recurring description is consistent enough to be treated as data. The torso is largely or wholly destroyed, sometimes including bone. The extremities, typically the lower legs and feet, survive, often still clothed or shod. Greasy residue is found on nearby surfaces. The room shows soot on the ceiling above and the floor below, and comparatively little damage elsewhere: furniture at a distance is scorched rather than burned, and the fire does not spread.
Mary Reeser, 1951. Reeser, 67, was found in her apartment in St Petersburg, Florida, reduced substantially to ashes. Part of her left foot survived, still in a slipper, along with her spine and a shrunken skull. The apartment was only lightly damaged. She was a smoker and had taken a sedative that night. The FBI concluded that she had fallen unconscious while smoking and that her clothing ignited. The anatomist Wilton M. Krogman examined the case and his notes survive.
John Irving Bentley, 1966. Bentley, in Pennsylvania, was almost entirely consumed. One leg remained. His pipe was found nearby.
Michael Faherty, 2010. Faherty, 76, was found in the living room of his home in Galway, Ireland, on 22 December 2010, severely burned. The room showed scorching on the ceiling above him and the floor beneath, and little else. The fireplace was lit. Forensic examiners from the Gardaí and the fire service searched the scene and found no accelerant. The pathologist Grace Callagy carried out the post-mortem and concluded that the extent of the burns precluded determining a precise cause of death. In September 2011 the West Galway coroner, Dr Ciarán McLoughlin, told the inquest that he had searched the medical literature, and returned a verdict of spontaneous human combustion. It was the first such verdict in Ireland and the first of his 25-year career. The following year, a coroner in Donegal, faced with a comparable fire, explicitly declined to reach the same conclusion.
The demographic. Cases cluster on people who could not react to a small fire: the elderly, the sedated, the intoxicated, the immobile, the asleep. This is documented across the case literature and is not a coincidence. A conscious, able-bodied person who feels an ember land on their leg brushes it off within a second.
Leading explanations
The wick effect (established mechanism, reproduced experimentally). A small external ignition source, typically a cigarette, an ember, or a candle, chars the clothing at one point. Heat splits the skin and releases subcutaneous fat. The liquefied fat is absorbed into the burned cloth, which then behaves exactly as the wick of a candle behaves: it draws liquid fuel to a flame that renders more fuel. A candle is a solid fuel with a wick through it. So, under these conditions, is a body.
The fire that results is small, low, localised, and very slow. It does not flash over, because it never gets big enough. It burns for hours, and the body contains enough stored energy to sustain it; even a lean person carries several pounds of fat. The extremities survive because they carry almost none.
This is not a thought experiment. In 1998, the forensic scientist Dr John de Haan of the California Criminalistics Institute wrapped a pig carcass in a blanket, ignited it with a small quantity of accelerant, and let it burn for the BBC's QED. It burned for about five hours. The midsection was destroyed, including bone. The less fatty legs remained. The surroundings were largely intact. The work was published in Science and Justice in 1999. Earlier experiments at Leeds University in the 1960s had shown that cloth soaked in fat sustains a slow burn once lit.
The alcohol hypothesis (historical, refuted). From the 18th century, the standard explanation was that habitual drinking rendered the body combustible. Pierre-Aimé Lair set this out at length in 1800. Justus von Liebig demolished it experimentally in 1859: flesh soaked in alcohol does not burn to ash.
Internal ignition (unsupported). No mechanism has ever been proposed by which a living body ignites without an external source. There is no chemistry for it. It remains the popular claim and it has never had a physical hypothesis attached to it.
What the popular version gets wrong
"The body reached thousands of degrees and the chair was untouched." This inverts the physics. The wick effect works precisely because it is not hot. It is a small flame burning slowly for many hours, close to the floor. A crematorium destroys a body quickly with a great deal of heat. A wick fire destroys a body slowly with very little. The undamaged room is not the mystery. It is the signature.
"No ignition source has ever been found." In most documented cases a source is present in the record: a cigarette, a pipe, a lit fireplace, a heater. In others, the source would have been consumed by the fire it started, which is what fires do to cigarettes.
"An Irish coroner officially ruled it real in 2011, so it is real." He recorded that he could find no other adequate explanation. That is a statement about the limits of a particular inquest, not a physical finding. The room had a lit fire in it. A coroner in the same country reached the opposite conclusion the following year on similar facts. The registry records the verdict, because it happened, and declines to treat it as evidence of a mechanism.
"It only happens to certain people, which is suspicious." It happens to people who cannot get up. That is the least suspicious fact in the case.
Current status
Partially explained. The wick effect accounts for the burn pattern, the intact extremities, the undamaged room, the residue and the duration, and it has been reproduced. It is not seriously contested in forensic science. What keeps this out of the later explained category is narrower and honest: for a small number of individual cases, including Faherty, the specific ignition source was never established, and one of those cases carries a coroner's verdict naming the phenomenon. The mechanism is settled. Particular files are not.
