The Baghdad Battery

A ceramic jar, a copper cylinder, and an iron rod. Fill the jar with vinegar and you can measure a small voltage across the copper and the iron, and this has been done many times, on television.
From this, an ancient civilisation with electricity, electroplating its jewellery two thousand years before Volta.
The objects have no leads. There is no way to get the electricity out of them. The asphalt seal covers the top of the copper cylinder completely, which means nothing can be attached to it, and it means the electrolyte cannot be replaced when it is spent.
It is not a battery. It looks a great deal like a jar for storing scrolls, and jars for storing scrolls, built exactly this way, are known from the same region.
What is documented
The objects. A terracotta jar, roughly the height of a hand. Inside it, a cylinder of rolled copper sheet. Inside that, a rod of iron. The top of the copper cylinder is sealed with asphalt, and the iron rod is held in place by an asphalt plug.
The claim. In 1938, Wilhelm König, then director of the Baghdad Antiquities Administration, proposed that the assembly was a galvanic cell. He suggested it might have been used for electroplating.
It can produce a voltage. This is true and it is not in dispute. Fill the jar with an acidic liquid, and copper and iron in an electrolyte will produce a potential difference of around half a volt. Replicas have been built and they work.
A lemon will do the same. A lemon is not a battery in any sense that matters, and neither is this.
Leading explanations
It is a storage vessel. This is the leading interpretation and it accounts for the object.
Copper cylinders of this construction, sealed with asphalt, are known from Seleucia on the Tigris, and there they were used to hold rolled documents: papyrus or parchment. The copper protects the contents. The asphalt seals them. The iron rod is the spindle, and it corrodes, and the corrosion is what leaves the residue that has been read as evidence of an electrolyte.
The Baghdad objects are the same construction. What was found in them is degraded organic material, which is what you would expect from a scroll that has been in the ground for eighteen hundred years.
The objections to the battery reading, and they are decisive.
There are no leads. This is the whole case in one sentence. A battery is useless without a way to connect it to something. No conductors, no wires, no terminals, no connectors have ever been found with these objects, or with any comparable object, anywhere in the ancient Near East.
The seal covers the terminal. The asphalt closes off the top of the copper cylinder. You cannot attach anything to it without breaking the seal. And you cannot refill the electrolyte once it is exhausted, which means the device, if it were a device, could be used once.
There is no electroplated object. Not one. Ancient gilding is extremely well understood, and it was done by fire-gilding, using a mercury amalgam, a technique that is documented, that is chemically identifiable on surviving objects, and that is found everywhere. If somebody in Parthian Mesopotamia was electroplating, they left no plated object, no equipment, and no trace.
There is no text. The ancient Near East was densely literate and wrote a very great deal down, including a lot of technical material. Nothing anywhere describes electricity, a cell, a current, or any effect of one.
The find context is poor. König did not excavate the objects in situ. The provenance is weak, and the association of the three components is itself an interpretation.
What the popular version gets wrong
"It works, therefore it was a battery." A replica of the object, filled with an acid it was probably never filled with, connected to wires that were never found, produces a fraction of a volt. This demonstrates electrochemistry, which was going to happen whether anybody in Baghdad intended it or not. It does not demonstrate intent, and intent is the entire claim.
"They used it for electroplating." Then where is the plated object? Where is the equipment? Where is the anode? Where, in a civilisation that wrote on everything, is the single sentence describing it?
"Mainstream archaeology refuses to consider it." Mainstream archaeology considered it, examined the objects, compared them with the Seleucia scroll jars, noted the absence of leads, noted the sealed terminal, noted the absence of any electroplated artefact from the entire period, and concluded that it is a jar. That is not a refusal to consider. That is what considering looks like when it reaches a conclusion you did not want.
"It is out of place in history." It is entirely in place in history. It is a well-made storage vessel from a sophisticated society, and the only thing out of place is the interpretation somebody put on it in 1938.
Current status
Debunked. No leads, no terminals, no plated objects, no texts, and a close match to a known class of scroll container from the same region.
The registry keeps this record for a general lesson it illustrates unusually cleanly. A great many claims of ancient technology are built the same way: by demonstrating that a thing could work, and treating that as evidence that it did.
Copper and iron in acid will always produce a voltage. That is a fact about chemistry, and it was true in Mesopotamia, and it is true in your kitchen, and it will still be true long after everybody has stopped arguing about the jar.
