Naga Fireballs

Reddish glowing balls are reported rising from the Mekong River, silently, to heights of up to a couple of hundred metres, before vanishing. They are seen most on one night a year: the end of Buddhist Lent. Two explanations compete. Neither has been established, and the strongest fact in the case is awkward for both of them.
What is documented
What is reported. Glowing balls, reddish, ranging from small sparks to roughly the size of a basketball, rising from the water and disappearing at altitude. Counts vary from a few dozen to a claimed several thousand in a night. Reports come from a stretch of the Mekong roughly 250 km long, centred near Phon Phisai, and also from smaller rivers, lakes and ponds in the region.
The timing. The reports concentrate overwhelmingly on the night of Wan Ok Phansa, the end of Vassa, the Buddhist rains retreat, in late October. This is a date fixed by the lunar calendar, and it moves through the Gregorian year.
The name is recent. This is the fact most often left out. Local people called the lights ghost lights until the mid-1980s, when the local council formally adopted the name phaya nak lights, after the naga, the serpent of Lao and Thai tradition. The lights may be old. The naga attribution, as an official name and as the basis of a festival that now draws large crowds, is roughly forty years old.
The 2002 documentary. A Thai television documentary broadcast on iTV showed Lao soldiers firing tracer rounds into the air across the river during the festival period. The broadcast caused a substantial public backlash on both banks.
The 2021 statement. Lao authorities investigated during a COVID-19 curfew and stated publicly that it was extremely unlikely anyone could have fired weapons or flare ammunition that night without their knowledge, citing a heavy police presence.
No instrumented study. No published study has recorded the phenomenon with calibrated instruments, established a spectrum, or triangulated an origin point. This is the central weakness of the entire case, and it applies equally to everyone arguing about it.
Leading explanations
Tracer or flare fire from the Lao bank (evidenced, disputed). Jessada Denduangboripant, a biologist at Chulalongkorn University, has argued for years that the lights are tracer rounds or flares fired from across the river, and has pointed to photographs showing streaks of light consistent with rounds fired from the ground. The 2002 iTV footage is the strongest single piece of evidence in the case. Against it: the 2021 Lao statement, and the fact that the footage documents shots being fired, which is not the same as documenting that every reported light is a shot.
Phosphine or methane from the riverbed (proposed, unsupported). Decomposing organic matter in the sediment is said to generate phosphine, which is claimed to ignite on contact with air. The mechanism has never been demonstrated at the site, and the conditions on a riverbed do not obviously produce spontaneous ignition. Nobody has recovered the gas, measured a concentration, or reproduced the effect.
The problem with the natural account. A gas mechanism should track water temperature and organic decay, which follow the seasons. The reports track a religious festival whose date is set by the moon and moves year to year. That is not what a riverbed does. It is what people do.
What the popular version gets wrong
"The naga fireballs are an ancient tradition going back centuries." The lights may well be. The name is not. Until the mid-1980s they were locally called ghost lights, and the naga attribution was formalised by a local council. The mass festival is a modern event.
"Science has proved they are methane." No study has established this. It is a hypothesis with no field measurement behind it.
"A documentary proved they are gunfire." A documentary filmed soldiers firing across the river. That is real evidence about that occasion. It does not establish the origin of every light reported over 250 km of river across decades, and the Lao authorities have publicly disputed it.
Current status
Unsolved. Not because the phenomenon is beyond explanation, but because nobody has done the work. A single season of instrumented observation, with calibrated cameras on both banks and triangulation, would probably settle it. Until someone does that, the registry records two hypotheses, one piece of footage, and a name that is younger than most of the people arguing about it.
